Will this affect the device limit?
I still have a rather large number of devices that I use to access my account.
Will this decrease the number of devices per user, or does each user get a set number of devices that they can access the service on?

so what you are saying is that as a paying subscriber, i can only use 1 user, and the only way for me to share my account with one other person(my wife) is to pay the subscription for 6 people? i think this is a pretty huge oversight on Google's part, especially to users (like myself) that have been using play music since day one.

@Unknown, It's not an oversight, because it's still cheaper than signing your wife up for her own subscription @$10 month. Even with the early adopter discount for google play music, you'd still be saving money. It's just distinguishing between people using it for themselves, and people using it for families.

I didn't have to cancel my current account to see the option. Under my subscription details, i saw a new button that says "upgrade to family account" or something along those lines. It seems that the people in invited to my plan did, indeed, need to cancel their current account to join my plan.

If you aren't seeing this button yet, then i assume it hasn't rolled out to you (or your area or whatever) yet.

Any idea when we can sign up on a web browser or iOs? My Rdio family plan expires in 4 days and I need to switch 5 users over. None have Android. Otherwise have to switch to Apple or Spotify and will probably never make the swap back. I can understand not signing up on iOs, but can't you keep the revenue by allowing signups online? Hell, make it only available to those signing up on Chrome with a Google+ account.

If you don't want to wait and do not have access to an android device there is another (though admittedly convoluted) solution. Install Bluestacks (an Android emulator) on your PC/Mac and sign in/manage your family plan from there.

Google Apps is for businesses. I'm not sure why people are surprised they can't be part of family plans. The entire purpose is for your BUSINESS to manage your account. They don't want your account managed by your family.

Like Chris I've had my family set up with GApps for a very, very long time (long before it was Google Apps for Business). I really wish they'd come up with some sort of 'Google Apps for Families' because I, too, and very disappointed when it comes to great features like this not being available.

I really don't understand this. Several years ago they had the "great unification" where supposedly all the problems regarding lack of functionality in Google Apps would be resolved. People were told you could finally combine accounts into your Google Apps account... which I did. Now things seem to be falling apart again... first with the Project Fi issue, now with Google Music for families. I can think of no logical reason why this should be an issue anyway. You can now have Youtube Red/Google Music on a GAPPS account. You can have Google Wallet, etc. etc. What is the issue? Regarding the comment from @Turbofool... I signed up for this when it was called Google Apps for Domains... it wasn't associated specifically with a business... the idea was if you didn't want a *.gmail.com address, you could use your own domain via Google Apps for Domains. Even if my account was business related, what's the reasoning here. Like I said earlier, you can have all kinds on "non-business" related apps now with GAPPS... this is just bizarre and arbitrary. If the APPS domain administrator doesn't have an issue, it's not an issue.

Well said Gerald Cox (and others)! I'm in the same boat as many of you. My family has been waiting for months to get this Family Plan. We've been slowly moving our playlists over from other services and cancelling other streaming accounts. I wouldn't mind so much if Google said that it was "coming soon" as they worked out the integration, but this is frustrating. Thankfully, Google has rolled out features to us over time and it's not as bad as it used to be. Hopefully they'll do the right thing.

Google Apps accounts actually work really well for families - everyone likes having their e-mail address being their name for one thing.

But if Google really doesn't want people using these accounts for other then work then they should provide a way to move gapps accounts (including history) to regular g-mail accounts.

Is it true that this allows family members to make purchases using my credit card?

    https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/play/5VAUQcVed0M/wQKzWZJFCQAJ

Also, Google Music apparently works in Peru. Does the family plan somehow block the service to users outside the announced countries?

The default is that if another family member tries to use the family payment method the family manager will have to approve each specific purchase. So wild teenagers are not a problem.

You can change that requirement if you wish.

Ditto. Seems to me that if the cost to "upgrade" for a regular price individual subscription to the family is only $5/month, it would only be fair that for early subscribers it should only cost us an extra $5/month ($12.99) to upgrade to a family subscription now. Google, we all know you're the greatest service going, please make this happen!

My Google Apps [domain] is owned by me. I don't see any issues here.
If they want to get rid of all the "free" users then either provide the means to transition off or create something like a "Google Apps for Families" for us folks to use. I'd gladly pay some sort of reasonable fee, just not as expensive as the Business side.

My view on the puts and takes of this implementation, in points:
+5 points - Family Plan in Canada!!! Thank you! Wife's and mine subscriptions at $7.99/month each would translate in a saving of $1/m and we can add the kids to the account!
-2 points - No YouTube Red in Canada; ads came back to YouTube too
-1 point - I'll lose my $2 off for signing up at day one
-1 point - Wife will also lose her $2 off for signing up at day one (well, day 2 maybe)
So far, it's worth it. But:
-1000 points - My kids can now purchase Google Play content?!?!? And I can't stop them? Really Google???? Someone tell me I'm not not understanding how that works.

STOP - Now that's a show stopper for us.

@derekGordon: by def'n, the legal terms of being a gapps admin are precisely very different to being a personal gmail user and _thats_ the problem! whether you are grandfathered in or not, the domain admin has different rights and ownership of data within the domain. its not special structuring its just the t&cs!

the problem starts and ends with the fact you're using a product designed for businesses, for your family. while functionally its a 'reasonable' fit, the laws and regulations on data are quite different.

I suspect the only sensible route for stability would be to develop an almost-clone of gapps for business called "gapps for groups|families" that has t&cs around domain manager that are more of an aggregate of personal privacy regulation and shared acceptance of accountability over what the domain admin is capable of doing. for a start they wont have visibilty or control over data owned by people in the group unless specific rights are required (eg to manage child accounts etc).

in fact, this product feature is a clear precursor to exactly that outcome, minus either custom domains, or the fact that gapps IDs cannot be currently assigned into groups.

For those asking if you you get a discount for using google play music sense its start. Isn't the fact that you are getting it for 6 people for a little less than double the normal price. On top of that to my understanding everyone also gets to activate it on 10 devices per user. Yet you are complaining about a discount. Explain to me how you aren't getting a huge discount for getting that many people for that low of price.

Personally, I just want to keep my $7.99/mo price should I decide to return to a solo subscription. So far, it sounds like that won't be possible; so, I don't want to risk changing to a family plan only to have others bail on their share of the cost. There would be no risk if I could at least get my $7.99/mo price back.

I guess one could argue that we were early adopters for Google Music, and well ... the family plan is still for Google Music. :)

Google has been really good with me about getting me back to the $7.99 price. I think my CC has expired twice. When I would go to renew it would be the higher price. I would contact them and they would fix it immediately. I think they might be willing to do the same if you revert back to a single plan.

This is a big fail for those of us who use Google Apps for Work for our families. It's a really big oversight and means that I'll either have to use Apple Music or Spotify until this is sorted out. Fingers crossed that the policy changes soon.

Will there be the possibility to upgrade an account from a Family Plan member to a full personal one, or otherwise transfer from one to another? You can't do this, for example, with Netflix, and it is very annoying!

Hi everyone! I am having great trouble signing up for the family plan with my Canadian credit card. The account seems to lock me out from any purchase. I have both paypal and CC. Anyone else have this issue?

Yeah, I only have PayPal and no need for a CC... Apparently my money isn't good enough for Google...

Can a regular Google account be a family manager and then invite Google for Work accounts as family members?

I was also boned by the lack of support for Google Apps/for Work support.

Such a shame, there is no way I'm giving my kids access to my credit card for Play Store, the family manager should have the option to require authorisation for all purchases on the "family card" not just for in-app purchases.

Enabling Family Plan mean that your family can now buy apps, movies, books, etc. on your credit card without any possible restriction.
So you won't add your kids and you won't add your older parents. Excellent for a family plan!
this is absolutely stupid! I suggest anyone who would like to regsiter to this offer to NOT do so until this mistake has been corrected.

Until I can block ANY purchases (not just in-app purchases), I'll never subscribe to this. Also, I would like to be able to link the family account to my Google Balance. Not a credit card. This option seems to be unavailable in Canada.

Okie dokie, here's another question: my wife and I don't mind sharing the accounts, especially at home where it's connected to a multiroom system.

Will a family account allow one account to get around the one concurrent play rule of the regular Google Play Music accounts? As in, if she switches on a Google Play playlist on my account at home and I have Google Family Plan, will it still stop me from playing it on my phone?

I've had my family discovered with GApps for a really, terribly long-standing (long before it had been Google Apps for Business). i actually would like they'd come back up with some style of 'Google MobileApps for Families' as a result of I, too, and extremely thwarted once it involves nice options like this not being accessible.
