This post fills me both with joy and anticipation for the new update as well as with anger.
It would've been best to delay that message until all nexus phones are able to get the update. Considering the last few versions that would be in a month or two. Or you also could have waited until all countries were able to pre/order the new nexus phones.
It really bothers me that I live in a country that's unfavoured by google despite having the most google employees outside of the usa. Well they maybe will or are already able to order it over some kind of fringe benefits ways.. but we have a few million other people that are not employed by google and would love to get these phones too. Also I doubt that this comment will be released in fear of more anger comments... One way to prevent them would be to release hard- and software to more people quicker or at least give out public dates.
Last but not least, I'm sure the new update will be awesome and I'm looking forward to it. Just sad that it will take one or two months until my nexus 5 will see the Marshmallow logo...
Why is it going to take 2 months until you can update your N5? I've already updated mine (I used the factory images), and am currently erasing the data (the new permissions system made all the apps crash, despite the fact I was on the M preview anyway).
I'm beyond amused that anyone can think the above is an acceptable sequence of events for an OS update. There's no reason that Nexus phones — letting alone the rest of Android phones — can't have the same update schedule as iPhones (or Chrome OS or Mac OS or Windows), to say nothing of the idea of having to wipe data because permissions cause crashes. Truly remarkable.
It will take that long because I don't want to wipe my phone and install the factory image. I'm using my phone everyday for work and don't really want to spend too much time to reinstall and reconfiguration everything. I'm waiting for the OTA and with the roll out in stages it normally takes about two months until my phone happens to be in the affected devices. My nexus tablet even normally takes three months but it doesn't matter that much there as it's more just a gaming device.
In fact Jared, my life is pretty good and I must admit I like to complain on certain topics. Biggest problem is more that there is no good platform to leave complains cause all will get marked as rage or spam by the community. But that's not what this comment should be about. I Want to make a serious discussion and am sorry if my comment came over a bit harsh.
I'm not quite sure if the rollout in stages of ota updates is the best way in case of security but it surely is good for stability. Waiting two months for a security update means two months in which my phone is unprotected. But sure I don't want a buggy phone and am glad if I get an update that has been tested thoroughly beforehand.
Seriously I want to thank the people working on that newest version of Android for the great achievements they made again with Marshmallow. I will gladly update and use it every day as soon as I get the update.
Ya as a Nexus 4 user, I am even more angry! But, here is what I have learnt to allay the fears that you have about getting a factory reset.
Just download the factory image. extract the contents. modify the flash-all.bat to remove one parameter in the command line. set the usb-debugging on in dev options of your phone, connect the phone to the computer and just run the *modified* flash-bat.
There you are all set.
PS. you will find tons of sites explaining this in more lurid detail if you do a search on google with "updating factory image without data loss on android"
@Ken Harrison - I don't know $10 per GB used is kind of outrageous. I know that this model has become more popular over the past couple of years and that really worries me. I didn't know about Project Fi and coming from Google I was expecting something a little more competitive. I get unlimited 4G LTE with T-Mobile right now with no contract. I'm curious to see Project Fi but at those prices, ouch.
@John Thomas - the Project Fi plan is not for everyone. I am almost always connected to WIFI at home or at work. With Fi, my phone bill is about a third of what it used to be. Big time data users will certainly have a different opinion.
I have first gen, only moto g 2013 was from Google Play edytion. Google shoud give US android 6 with dozę, RAM fixes! I CANT listem music whule play simple games... I cant listem music while i am reading articles in chrome.. 1 GB of RAM but my smartphone doesnt support multitasking.. On 4.4.4 everythink worked perfectly fine. Google, you have to give android 6 with bug fixes to Us. Thanks for reading.
I had the same device collecting dust in one of my drawers.. Why?? I realize it was time to move on. Maybe you can do the same after all is been 2 years of service.. And with one g of ram no way Jose. You better off getting something more up to date. Than dealing with good old had better times moto g.
Ehm... We have. My almost two year old N5 gets M soon as do a lot other older Nexus devices. For third party phones it depends on the chip manufacturer. If for example Qualcomm doesn't like the idea to build updated drivers for M for their two or three year old chips, then the phones using those won't get an update. If they decide to build the updated drivers, then the actual smartphone builders get to decide if they want to update their phones. And then the carrier decides when and if that update actually will be available for you. As you see: It's not by any way Google's fault. And when G has the power to decide (like with their Nexus phones) they decide in favor of their phones.
It turns three in two months. Support ends after sth between 18 and 24 months. I'd get a custom ROM. There are some pretty much stock Android ones out there AFAIK.
Please If You Change Your Decisions And Give The Update To The Nexus 4 ,that would be just amazing was waiting for the update for a long time and was excited
Google only supports devices for 18 months. Nexus 4 was released back in late 2012. It is outside the support window. You can probably look into third party ROMs that are based off of Android M in the near future
Android is a buggy OS from the beginning. The OS requires 2GB + RAM, QuadCore or OctaCore processor to run smoothly. If you see the iPhone 6 and 6+ are 1GB RAM and to my WOW factor the first iPad version is 256MB RAM where i can play Glu Mobile Games very smoothly but in android its never possible.
Even though we brought Nexus phones for the only reason it will get latest updates, but Google is failed to provide. Wait for sometime we may get some custom ROMs and enjoy the android M with that. I hope still Nexus 4 has a capability to run M because of the device configuration.
If a OS will not run on a hardware with 2GM RAM and Quadcore processor then its a STUIPD OS hope android will not go into that category.
Karthik S... what you have just written is utter drivel. i dont want to gen into a debate about android vs IOS, i just wanted you to know it was mind numbing to read.
I did, but all my apps are crashing and Messenger wiped out all my text message conversations. I didn't have any problems updating to any of the previews.

With Lollipop they totally bricked the Nexus 7 2012 and never patched for it. That is how much they care about their own product and customers. This time I wonder who the lucky recipients of planned obseletion will be. Up yours Google. I never buy nexus product again.
It just amazes me the ignorance of those that blame Google for the rollout of updates devices that are controlled by the carriers. Go buy an iPhone and shut the h*** up!

what about Nexus 7 (2012) 3G model? Did you start calling it Nexus 7 Mobile now?
