Galaxy Nexus? The iPhone 4S which came out a month earlier than the Galaxy Nexus is receiving the newest iOS version, not just a security update. You have to do much better than this.
TI no longer develops updated drivers for the OMAP processor found inside the Galaxy Nexus, so it's their fault that this device can no longer be updated. Apple, who makes their own A-series processors found inside the iPhone, does not have this problem.
How's the app compatibility on the iPhone 4s? I hear a lot of the newer apps don't work on it. App fragmentation on iOS is far worse than OS fragmentation on Android.

@Joel Anderson Surely Google has the resources to hire a developer to develop updated drivers for a discontinued processor. Or pay TI some money to get updated drivers once a year for a new OS in case there are some proprietary knowledge that TI is unwilling to share.
TI does not develop new drivers? So why does something like a cyanogenmod version with Android 4.4 or 5.x for the Galaxy Nexus exist? It should be impossible if your argument is a real show stopper.
If you're running a phone with iOS 8, which goes all the way back to the iPhone 4s, the app will simply work. That's basically all there is to it. There's a few games that require an iPhone 5S or newer, but that's not common. It's pretty simple.
Unofficial drivers were developed for the Galaxy Nexus to support 4.4 and 5.x. Key words being "unofficial", these drivers could not be pushed out by Google because then all hardware warranties with regards to TI would be null and void.
Unofficiall ROM's can do things stock ROM's can't, because they come with "no warranty of any kind:

I'm sure Google could come to some sort of agreement with TI if they wanted to. A lot of the OMAP stuff is open source too so, depending on the license, Google could conceivably fork it at some point in the past and apply its own fixes.
look at this FUD. the TI chip in galaxy nexus is used in many different devices and it has very up-to-date software. galaxy nexus works fine with 5.1. google stopped updating galaxy nexus because google wanted to not update galaxy nexus. there is nothing else to it than this
Here is the deal, Cyanogenmod can afford to do anything they want with out of date drivers, because they tell you in bold letters "Anything that goes wrong is your fault. We provide no guarantees" etc. Google cannot do that, if it pushed out an update with old drivers and it borks, Google will be taken to court with a class action suit. Google also cannot "pay" a developer to update the driver for the SOC, that needs knowledge of the SoC design and components in detail which would be a corporate secret of them. And could somebody tell me how paying a company that went out of business and is not longer dealing with the component will work? That would basically be an acquisition. For one SoC, for one device, that most people moved on from..

I'm sure that Google could have worked out something for their then less than a year old flagship device. It's okay to say move on now. Not quite cricket in 2013.
Fix the carrier ecosystem. What percentage of Android devices are Nexus devices? While a step in the right direction, this doesn't help a lot of people.

Google CANNOT leave the fight to disconnect updates from the carriers to the manufacturers. Even Samsung, who has the largest android manufacturer marketshare in the USA, is not big enough to get out from under the carrier's thumb on this issue.
BUT, if google, as the android OS source, went to the carriers and told them no more carrier-approved-updates, the carriers would have to listen.
Samsung's steps are positive but they need support from google on this. I dream of a future when carrier bloatware is a thing of the past and no one has to wait for Verizon or AT&T to do something to get their phone updated. Apple pushes updates when they want to; Google needs to push for the same thing!
As a loyal nexus fan (not the 6. Too big) I welcome this! If you can make the updates so they don't break root or anything like that it would be that much better! (I know that's kind of Pipe dream).

I was waiting to see how Google handled this issue to determine whether I bought another Nexus phone, if it had been mishandled I was planning to buy an iPhone. If the information in this blog is correct I would be quite happy to buy another Nexus phone. I'm glad to see google taking security seriously.
Extending major updates support from 18 months to two years for Nexus devices is still not enough, but at least I am so glad to see Google are in the right direction.
Compare to Apple, a 2011 iPhone 4s can still get official OS upgrade support this year for IOS 9, that is four years support and that is double of what Google/Nexus offer now.
List price of a 64G iPhone 6 plus with 48 month support was $849, and 64G Nexus 6 with last 18/24 month support was $699, anyone with primary school education can easily figure out which one has better solid value and is better choice.
If you it once it comes out, you might have a point. But right now, a 16GB iPhone 5s is more expensive than a 16GB Nexus 6.
I still have my old Nexus 4 here. Not my everyday device but just for development. Still getting updates (it'll get Android M), it was released almost 3 years ago, and it cost $300.
That's great news! Security updates are my main concern with Android, and this confirms my decision to only buy Nexus phones. I'd love to the the updates as Nexus Factory Images ASAP thou, as my Nexus 5 is rooted so I can't use OTA updates (I think).

The better question is, once they're bored of doing the security patches, what next? Is the software going to be opened to allow us to maintain our own firmware, or will it be tossed in the trash and we're all outta luck? (I'm not sure what public docs and tools are out there, but they usually fall short of a proper hand-off)
Cmon, guys -- commit to opening the toolchain and build process so we can cut firmware easily. That'd be great !

It would be really nice of atleast Google has complete control over the security and most important Android update to fix vulnerabilities, not the OS to newer version (which is not possible). So that is available to every Android user without any delay.
Actually, Google can push security fixes via Google Play Services if you're running Android 5.0 or higher. That said, I guess it can't fix things that are as deeply integrated as the StageFright vulnerability?
This whole idea of "Be different, not the same." is dead due to fragmentation.It might be better if Google had included some sort of theming,custom menu and ability to update packages like Linux distros and made Android in as installable form like ubuntu , red hat, etc.
That's a good move, although without the OEM's doing the same it would not have a great effect.
I'd love Android to move to a more Windows style, where the core OS is the same and can be updated from a central place. Let the OEM's customise the functionality, perhaps even control the availability of major updates (so OS version updates don't muck their custom code since they always break tons of apps), but leave the low level OS updates in Google's hands.
An automatic bugfix and security update for all Android devices once a month would be a godsend. (Next step after that would be having a central repository of drivers and updating that for all vendors using a chip.)

Google, please update your device for even more years, as long as the device can handle it. If Android One devices can handle the updates, so does Nexus 4. It's still a very decent device.
Nexus 7 2013 LTE? Are you serious, that this is such a big deal to support that device? It's not in this support circle, the n4 got the lolli earlier, than this and LTE version always get's new stuff months later than the wifi version...so sad, so angry...

I have a samsung galaxy S3. Are they also going to get a security update? I realize its an older mobile devise but it has my entire life in it just as well as all the people that have more expensive mobile device. Please let me know. Im not even mobile friendly. Meaning I dont get into the " snooping and hacking of others bizz" ive got everything CM Security has out on my cell fone but its not protecting it. My mobile just starts repeatedly downloading the google app and the time in right hand corner of my cell fone just started flashing for over 2 minutes. New to me. Flashlight turned on yesterday as I was downloading an app. Im about ready to toss my mobile device because they already hacked our laptop!

DeleteApple stopped selling the 4S around this time last year. For them to keep supporting it isn't anything to brag about.
DeleteThe N7 was sold until 2013 and still is being updated. Apple typically will stop updates after one to two years of the device being off the market.

Apple stopped selling the 4S last year. For them to keep supporting it after "four years" isn't something to brag about.

Please update your system of all android devices. Follow the example of WINDOWS PHONE 10. My phone is a Samsung GRAN PRIME DUOS.

I have a samsung galaxy S3. Are they also going to get a security update? I realize its an older mobile devise but it has my entire life in it just as well as all the people that have more expensive mobile device. Please let me know. Im not even mobile friendly. Meaning I dont get into the " snooping and hacking of others bizz" ive got everything CM Security has out on my cell fone but its not protecting it. My mobile just starts repeatedly downloading the google app and the time in right hand corner of my cell fone just started flashing for over 2 minutes. New to me. Flashlight turned on yesterday as I was downloading an app. Im about ready to toss my mobile device because they already hacked our laptop!
